Joining curves

Post by admin »

Posting for Michael:

How do I improve the connection on two curved pieces of my track? My layout works on paper (scarm) but in reality I'm getting derailments nearly all the time. It's very frustrating.

Are you using flex track or sectional track?

If you are using flex track I always try to stagger the rail joints so they are not right across from each other.

I try to avoid joins on curves if at all possible. Unless thye curve is very long, it usually possible to "move" the join by cutting the section leading up to the curve to place the join a short distance from the start of the curve the using a long, or full, length of track for the curve itself.
If this is not feasible, I would treat the join like a baseboard joint and solder the track to copper clad sleepers either side of the joint.
