Jurassic park model railroad

Paul’s been back in touch with his Jurassic park model railroad.

If you missed his earlier ones, they are here.

“I started my layout in September. It is HO around the wall layout which is 9×13 feet. The layout is operational although not completely landscaped.

The first part of the movie shows the overall layout from outside the operational area. The rest is from within the control area of the layout.

I access the area by rolling under the liftout on a mechanics rolling stool. I also include a number of still photos which highlight specific areas of the layout.

You will see the farm, the waterfront, the mountain, the coal mine, the lake and the Jurassic adventure park complete with 3 dinos.

Paul”

A huge thanks to Paul for sharing his Jurassic Park model railroad – it’s a fantastic layout, and seeing it take shape over each post is a real delight. Can’t wait to see the next one.

Some of you will have seen the ladder in Paul’s layout pics. Paul was kind enough to send in a ‘how-to’ for that too.

And lastly, a few of eagle eyed readers noticed a new link on the blog yesterday – it’s for forum where you can get your model train questions answered.

Here it is: Modeltrainanswers.com.

It’s my second stab at a forum. The last one was overly complicated, so this time I thought I’d try something very, very simple.

Please do leave a question on it, or if you feel like making someone’s day and helping out, leave an answer.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming.

And if today is the day you get started on your layout, the Beginner’s Guide is here.

Best

Al

The water is very realistic looking. How was it made??

  3. Danny says:

Very nicely done.I like this allot.it has allot to look at,nice imagination.you might wanna get some 1st responders ready for the rescue of the canooers heading over the falls.😎

    layout looks good

Hi Nice looking layout. Lots of detail and imagination. It will lift again once you get the rest of the landscaping etc done. One very small point . The two mountaineers/ the ropes would be hanging in front of the mountaineers not tied on to their backs. If they are abseiling down then the ropes would go past them in front and all the way to the ground. A niggle I know but you have made such a good job it is always worth sorting these little bits. Again well done.

Nice Paul! I live near a port and it stinks so it must be made with toilet paper too. Dinosaurs are interesting but I’d like Big Foot because they’re so elusive. The locos need Seuthe smoking units. Put two inside that NS diesel, they really smoke a lot you know. Take care!

  7. I like the way you run the engines real slow so you can see all the cars. Everyone should do that. With that said, camera focus needs alot of help. I’m a big fan of Norfolk Southern. Thats what I have on my layout because they run those in my location, plus I love the Stallion( true horse power!!!) . I really like your layout, lots of different stuff to look at, Good Job so far. Super nice! I love it thanks for sharing it with us.

In answer to some of the comments here goes. The mountaineers are lucky to be tied on at all. I could hardly hold the thread between my fat fingers. The trick to having a nice harbor scene is to use new toilet paper. Marklin of Sweden has videos of all aspects of modeling and that is where I learned how to make the harbor water. It’s a very quick way to do it and the waves are added as you make the water with a paint brush. After it all dried, which took about 3 days, my wife added some white paint to the peaks of the waves to simulate foamy water. People are always asking me “can the trains go faster” I say sure but it is not realistic and enjoy looking at the carsnot a blur passing by. By the way this way my first attempt to make a video and I realize now that I could have set the camera to a contiuous focus mode which would have helped. I wish that I could have someone else operate the camera so that I could use the NCE Powercab to show the special effects that are possible with the DCC decoders. A question for Dave you mentioned using a Mobious camera for the on the train moving video. Could you tell us about the specific model and your thoughts about how it works. Thanks, Paul BTW I am in Northport Ny and if anyone is nearby maybe we could meet and talk trains.

  17. Dominic Joseph Radanovich says:

Pretty neat layout! I especially like Your farm and the way the various sections and pastures are divided up. The dinosaurs are great! I like “Dino” the green saurian. Then there is the colourful NS diesel loco. The colours of white, yellow, red and black are the four sacred colours of the Native North American world. They represent the four directions, the four seasons, the four races, the four ages in the lives of the People. Intentional or not, they represent these things to me and to millions of Native People. Good work, and enjoyable video, too.

Great job! Finally got to see someone else’s TP water front and I like it. Nice to see the Coach help out too. You mentioned in the video that you did this a while ago and I hope you can share some updates. Also love to see some humor, after all this is old guys playing with trains. “Of course I crash them! Why else would a grown man play with Trains!”.. Gomez Addams” LOL.

  22. Frederic Lucas says:

If the dinosaurs hadn’t died, and Man just built modern society with them nearby.

  23. Rich B. says:

I didn’t realize dino’s were still around, must be if on the RR. Nice side interest and the rest looks really serious and quite realistic. Some of the comments are constructive, the Yeti idea and say with a gloomy forest and cave with bones scattered would be eye catcher as mentioned above. Good addition this morning…

Trains are very cool , scenes are very cool in most impresses with your hand painted backdrop
… well done indeed . That’s the most complicated aspect at times .
