“Hi Alastair, progress on the wharf kit to date.
Almost finished after 196 hours of work in 7 weeks.
Still another 14 hours of work approximately remaining and this section of my layout will be complete.
Note the seagulls hanging above the Bar & Grill at the right and also above the Oyster company at the left.
Second photo shows the track laid in the “concrete” base and deliveries can be made to the industries.
Keep up the excellent work.
Cheers
Brian, the HOn3 guy”
Thanks to Kevin and Brian. In fact, thanks to everyone – without you all, this site wouldn’t exist…
That’s it for today.
Please do keep ’em coming. Just mail me whatever you’d like to share and I’ll do the rest.
And if today is the day you swap the comfort of your armchair for some fun on your layout, the Beginner’s Guide is here.
Best
Al
PS Latest ebay cheat sheet is here.
It`s very nice and done with care.
very well done, great skill set,a lot of work is a understatement….i do O guage and get frustrated.so i think your stuff is gran. thanks for the show menship
A very nice neat layuot. I am still clearing space and planning track layout. Seems the simple plans are as good as more complicated ones.
Kevin & Brian’s layouts were really neat. I liked the gas price on Kevin’s layout “.32” Haven’t seen that price since the late “60s”
I am always amazed at the skill and dedication that all of the hobbyists have in developing their layouts. Congrats to all.
Vince
Kevin,
Nice layout. I like the gas station, Cola 5 cents. Brian, great job on the wharf. Love the rust weathering.
Very nice,I do wish all of you that send in your lay outs would but your track size with it. I really like your sea gulls. thanks
Great layout Kevin. Very good job.
Brian, keep up the great job. Detail is wonderful.
Well done Kevin, very good first attempt, keep up the good work.
Really like the wharf Brian, especially the water effect, well done
Kevin I think it looks neat and clean good job!!!!!
Kevin’s first layout, that’s impressive for a first attempt!
As for what Peter and the others say, I have to agree. For a first layout, Kevin, your layout surpassed mine by far. Good planning and workmanship. After a few more layouts, Kevin will almost be at the level of Dave from across the Pond. Keep it going Kevin.
I LIKE YOUR LAYOUT. VERY NICE.
Great look.. I’ve got the same “Mine” & ya gave me and idea on location. You
did a nice Job on the Wharf!! Now spend some time Running them Trains –

I am very impressed that you accomplished what you did with your first layout.
First of all, rather than just lay your track in an oval to simplify wiring, you actually included turnouts, very good!
You ever have telephone poles that are wired. And you included a water effect with your first layout.
All in all, very well done and very impressive!
both VERY NICE
Awesome layout Kev, love the mine and the pond with all the wildlife.
great layouts I am just designing mine in “HO”
You have some neat features and unique building structures, Kevin. Enjoy your layout.
Great detail and just the right amount of weathering on the wharf structure, Brian.
Good stuff.

Hey, Kevin:
Greetings from South Carolina. Just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed the pictures and narrative about your layout. Top Drawer as they say. Thank you for sharing. David
What a great idea! I never thought of using screen material as fence.
Kevin, your layout looks great. It shows what you can do without spending a lot of money. Brian, the whole wharf area looks great. Especially like your weathering.
Very nice job to both guys. Look at those power lines, now that takes patience and a steady hand. Kevin has a couple wrecking cranes on his layout, hopefully, he doesn’t expect a catastrophe. I hope to post my D & H wrecking consist soon. It is quite colorful. Unfortunately, it did get a lot of service, and I was an eyewitness of sorts to one of them.
Most excellent
a very nice layout makes me enthused to work more on mine
Nice, sending on!
Good job Kevin. Well planned out. Great basis for upgrading slowly. Like they say you are never finished always upgrading and improving it
What is the overall size of the layout? Great job for first. I am working on my first, also.
Look nice. My will be something like that.
This site is fantastic. I learn so much from the contributors and get ideas to add to my layout.
I get a “kick” out of everyone’s idea of scale when it comes time to mark the middle stripes on a road.
Some are half the width of the vehicles on the road, others are somewhat smaller.
But all in all, it never fails, the stripes “if real” would be 10 feet long and 2 feet wide. I can’t understand how everyone makes this scaling mistake.
Re: Butch’s road stripe comment, you’ll have to admit that drivers would notice them and stay in their proper lane! 😀
Great work on both layouts. Don’t stop!
Beautiful work on the details
Ralph
Still waiting for water in Brian’s canal,You can’t leave like that.It takes away from what you’re trying to accomplish.

Keven, Liking your layout need to add more lanscape filler like trees and shrubery and that wooden bridge is out of scale. They have nice girder bridges on Ebay. Would fit in nicely.Carry on!

Really, really nice…love it!
Looks great!!!!
Very nice. Better than my first layout attempt. These recent post encourage me to send something in
Kevin, Great job on your firdt layout. I really enjoyed seeing your photos. Your layout has a whimsical quality about it that is very enchanting. I was really impressed by the wiring of the telephone/power poles. Thanks for sharing your story and photos.
Brain, I always enjoy seeing the progress on you HOn3 layout. I don’t know how you find the time for such intricate work. I look forward to seeing Red Hook Harbor’s completion (and some trains running). :=)
Kevin…very clean and precise
Very well done, and in such a “short” time. Wish we could all know how much time there is to “finish” our layouts. Gotta tell you. Those are really BIG ducks. Enjoy your railroad.
I love both layouts. The whimsical cars are fun. I am impressed with the power line wiring! When will the fish oil operation start shipping?
Nice job on the first layout Kevin. Like your mining company. Was it a kit or scratch built?
It wasn’t long ago that I sent photos of my very first layout, and I got a lot of great tips from this site. I have completed just about all I want to do on my layout and beginning to break it down to start layout #2. It’s the start that counts, and as you have fun, you will be wanting to begin #2 also. You have been bitten by the “model railroad bug”.
Keep up the good work.
Hey Kevin what a great job for a first time out, building a train layout.
Don’t worry about what the ballast is from it works right. And the track looks great. It is a nice layout all in all. Be proud of what you have built.
Kevin, Good job on your layout. I especially like the mine and the large trackside station.
nicely done
Kevin….great layout for first time…….water pond is great, and you wired the telephone poles. That’s great detail….. not many modelers do that. And the weathering on the mine structure. Is that N guage?
Brian…..great waterfront scene and detail.
Really nice work Kevin,
Keep it up, it’s a lot of fun.
I’ve stalled, but will pick it up again as weather keeps me inside.
