Ralph’s HO scale layout

Ralph’s been in touch with his HO scale layout:

“Hi Al,

Following up on my email yesterday, here are three photos of my 68″X68” HO layout.

These pictures give an over view of the layout which include a country fair, a small airport, an auto racetrack and grandstand, and a tunnel with a station on the top.

I’m thinking that a monorail running over the layout would be a fun addition… but have not been able to find such a product.

I have three trains running…..

#1. A Marklin vintage model with a 3020 locomotive & passenger cars from 1947-1954

#2. A Marklin intermodal train which circles the airport.

$3. A Bachmann “The General” which runs on an elevated figure 8 track.

Ralph”

“Hi Alastair,

I just placed my order. I hope I can get some inspiration to take this to great places.

Phil”

I know some of you are often puzzled when I post pics of a layout that hasn’t taken shape yet.

But for me, it’s the whole point of this hobby: creating something from nothing.

Looking at one hell of a mess and then scratching your head over wiring is all part of the process. Every layout you have ever seen, at one point, was a rat’s nest of wires, tools, track and profanities.

All you have to do is make a start because no layout happens overnight.

A huge thanks to Phil for sharing and I wish him well.

And who can help with his monorail idea?

Also, if you missed it yesterday, one or two of you have asked if there is a way to search through the blog. Yes, there is, it’s called the Golden Key.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming.

And if today is the day you decide to join in the fun and start laying track, the Beginner’s Guide is here.

Best

Al

Ralph, you might look into Kato, They had Japanese monorail systems a few years back. They might require some kit bashing. Good luck with the monorail!! And keep having fun on your rr. Cheers

Ralph…. What a colorful fun layout. Love the amusement park

Phil….. plan plan plan and make sure your track-work is 125% perfect. Nothing ruins a fun day running trains like a derailment

    Ralph,
Very interesting. I have a question, however. Where is the catapult that’s needed for the plane to take off and the arresting wires for it land safely?

  10. Jim Turner says:

Wasn’t that General a kit? I seem to recall my father building it. Still one of my best running and looking! Trying to get an effect similar to your 8 but folded, using the same kind of old pylons. You gave me an idea. Thanks Ralph!

Amazing layout! Tamiya make a monorail kit- it will need modification, for one it only comes with an out-of-character paper body, the rail would look weird but I think could be weathered (the motor’s in the car), and it’s battery powered, but the basics are there and I think it could be a fun cheap-ish project if you like to kitbash a bit!

Much credit here and trains are running, if it suits the architect nothing much other matters…

I have a Marklin my father purchased for me used in 1955. It has the solid center rail., can anyone tell me if the track is interchangeable with the studded center rail? Thank you very much. Frank

Ralph, I was at disney world in 2009 and they had a disney monorail, battery operated train set for sale at that time that I bought, I don’t remember the price and it might be a little larger than HO scale. You might try to check if they still carry them, if that may be what your looking for. It’s the one in Florida.

  18. Don says:

the circus is great as is the wiener mobile & ice cream cone stand, everything was awesome. Happy New Year everyone.
