HOn3 logging railroad

Brian’s been back in touch with some more stunning pics of his HOn3 logging railroad:

“Here is a collection of photos showing detailed scenes of my HOn3 layout along a 12 inch wide shelf around the walls in a 14ft by 10ft room.

I hope to have a video soon of trains running on the layout.

All the best for now.

I do enjoy seeing Brian’s updates. There is something about his layout, it has such character, he really does know how to create a scene.

You can see more of Brian’s stuff in the Hall of Fame.

And when it comes to logging layouts, Al’s always springs to mind:

HO logging layout plans.

Now on to Jim:

(His last post is at the bottom of this one) if you want to get up to speed.)

“Greetings, Al. I’m still weathering freight cars and putting together videos. But I thought I’d send this one along to your site.

It’s a train ride with a 4-4-0 Santa Fe and old time passenger cars operating from the “B & B” Depot excursion facilities. I changed windows in the passenger cars, weathered the trucks and wheels, added seats and passengers. Hope you all enjoy.

Jim AZ”

The very latest ebay cheat sheet is here.

A big thanks to Jim and to Brian for sharing the latest on his HOn3 logging railroad. All these years on and I still love seeing how your layouts develop and evolve. It’s wonderful to see.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming because it’s very quiet this end.

And if today is the day when you decide to join in the fun, the Beginner’s Guide is here.

Best

Al

Beautiful work all around!. Jim, what kind of video camera did you use on the moving train? It was great. Cheers! NJ Mark

  2. Paul Harris says:

Thank’s for showing , Jim, superb lay out, reminded me of a trip we took on the Durango & Silverton Railroad some years ago on one of our USA trips.

    Brian,
Your detail wok on each scene is incredible. I have rarely seen such realistic detail.

  5. Brian Messenger says:

Excellent video of your well detailed layout Jim. Same question as above, what camera did you use on the moving train?

  6. Bob Bouskill says:

I loved the video. All those passengers and no one at the throttle. And how did the B&O car get close to the Santa Fe, they are many miles apart. I especially liked that you had an excellent camera to record your video. I too have an old Mantua 4-4-0, it wouldn’t run when I got it so it got the name of Sparky. It is my grandson’s favourite engine.

  7. Appookta says:

    Brian – fabulous work!

  8. Dale Popula says:

Wonderful work, very, especially the canyon. I was impressive. will your details. I like many of the others is wondering what camera you used?
With all of you talent for detail, I assume that replacing those chunky crossing gates is at the top of you To Do List.

  9. Fantastic work. I love it. Such detail and color schemes.

  10. Kenneth W. Hall Jr says:

Awesome. I enjoyed the ride. Thanks. Keep up the great job and looking forward to seeing the completed project.

  11. Enjoyed the ride. Fewer modelers are doing 1890-1910. Don’t like diesels…

  12. Jim says:

Great thanks for all your gracious comments. The camera is GOPRO cube mounted on the deck of an ore car and an iPhone for normal video. Hope to eventually install electronic crossing gates etc. traffic lights and other various lighting. Again, your comments are greatly appreciated.

  13. Mickael Macht says:

  17. Will says:

    Great work Jim!
Have you ever sent in a plan of your layout? What is the overall size?

  18. Jim says:

Answers to some questions and comments. The B&O passenger and cabooses are from my layout from back East. The “owners “ of the B&B Depot got em real cheap, refurbished em and now use them for sleeping and dining rooms for guests. The streets are 1/4 inch black foam sheets, painted asphalt black and lined with a white paint pen. The layout is a modified dog bone with several sidings for the service areas, lumber yard and the excursion enterprise. The dimensions are approximately 4 feet wide and 14 feet long. The vertical rock walls are ceiling tile and the mountain is foam sheets all covered in hydro cal. Again, thanks for all your comments.

Both layouts are inspirational. Photos and videos like these that Jim and Brian sent in helps me to push on with my project. Both well done.

Cant get enough of your work. I cant the courage to replace the broken gears on my HO, Bachman, 3 truck Shay and I was curious how your Shays are running. Please make a video and keep your fan base happy.
    Big Al- thanks

  30. Brian Messenger says:

George, both my HOn3 Shays and Heislers (+/- 40 years old) are brass imports made by Westside Model company and run exceptionally well and all fitted with DCC with the bells, whistles and full sound.
I will get a video made with them running soon.
A friend here also had to replace the gears in his HO Bachman Shay and Climax and both now run very well.

    Reply to Terry Millers comment.
A 12 inch wide shelf all around the 4 walls allows me to “super” detail my layout.
I am currently working on the lower shelf (double deck layout) which is 24 inches wide as a I have a lot more buildings and a harbour to put on there. (see previous posts of my lower shelf under construction)
    Thank you for the comment.

    Jim,
Great video! You’re giving Dangerous Dave some real competition now — music track even! I always enjoy any photos or videos of your layout as it has such an authentic southwest US feel to it. Excursion train is a great way to justify running old steam on a modern diesel layout. I loved all the railfans on the sidewalk watching the excursion train. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!

    Brian,
I love all your HOn3 logging layout details. I’ve just been reading the new 640-page book “The Shay Locomotive: An Illustrated History” and there are tons of logging photos. The only thing I noticed is the real logging operations looked a lot messier than your layout. I’m sure there must have been a few prototype logging operations that valued neatness. 🙂

  34. JT in Carolinas says:

Great work! Thanks for sharing so I can have this fine way to start my day!

  35. Sparky says:

The attention to detail is absolutely amazing and to display all that on a 12 inch shelf around your garage is ingenious. Just shows the rest of us what can be done and thoroughly enjoyed. The video and editing was superb. Thanks so much for sharing, giving us all much inspiration.

  37. Peter Bayley-Bligh says:

Phenomenal way of constructing a railway and amazing detail all round.

  38. Brian Olson says:

Love POV shots on model railroads, when I use them I’m reminded of all the work I still need to do!

  39. Robert Millott says:

Thanks for thr ride Jim. I enjoyed it very much. You have a great looking railroad layout.
