O scale model train layouts

Stephen has added to the collection of O scale model train layouts on the blog with this beauty:

“Hi Al

Previously I sent in a 2′ X 2′ O scale practice layout for next to no money.

It worked pretty well. I learned a lot and found out how much l had to learn and teach myself.

About 6 months ago I started a 6′ X 9′ board in our home office.

Well my wife didn’t like all the train stuff around the room so she gave me a spare room.

The first thing I did was add a 3′-6″ X 12′ L to the board.

I had to change my plans quite a bit but I am very happy with the extra space.

I have the track down and the trains running the way they should. Now I started the scenery.

I am using old Lionel but a lot of the accessories are more toy like than I want. So I have to see what I can and can’t use. With a little creativity I think I can make it work.

I am starting at one end with a loose idea and I am in no hurry. I pick up building and scenery bits and try them out. So far so good.

Here are some pictures of my progress

Steve from Toms River NJ.”

I can’t wait to see how Stephen’s layout progresses. I loved the water coming out of the pipes in the second last pic.

I though it was really interesting too, how he started with a ‘small, no cost layout’ to get his hand in – then moved on to this one. Well, for a second layout, I think it looks smashing.

Big thanks to Stephen for sharing and adding to the O scale model train layouts.

And thanks to everyone who takes the time to post a comment on the site too.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming.

And if today is the day you get started on your layout, the Beginner’s Guide is here.

Best

4-6-0 steam locomotive video – Arnie’s

My word – this post on Arnie’s 4-6-0 steam locomotive still gets comments – have a look at them all below.

“Hi Al,

Just finished viewing Rob’s “Farland Howe” slide show. And like you, I very much enjoyed it.

Your website has clearly grown in subscribership and the scope, array and creativity of submissions.

I just finished a new video I would like to submit to you and the viewers.

I am planning to hopefully do/add to my small series on steam locomotive videos.

I have some I previously created and submitted to you. I’m always looking for a new ‘slant’ to serve as a story line for viewing the trains.

So I came up with this one for a recently acquired steam locomotive.

This video depicts a fictional journey of a Baldwin 4-6-0 steam locomotive, also known as a “Ten Wheeler,” going once around my free-lanced N scale Susquehanna Valley & Gulf Summit Railway.

This class of ten wheeler was originally built circa 1891.

The video uses the fiction of the loco having been acquired by the Susquehanna Railroad during the early 20th century and is now seen in light freight service during the late 1950s and 60s. I presented it as a tour the scenic layout.

Hope you enjoy it Al.

Thanks,

Arnie”

(Arnie’s pics reminded me of Warren’s: 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive HO scale.)

Rather than write what I think of Arnie’s stunning 4-6-0 steam locomotive video – I thought I’d leave it up to you. Please do post a comment below.

A huge thank you to Arnie, for posting videos like this and helping out with the Beginner’s Guide. We’re lucky to have him!

And please do keep ’em coming, it’s getting a bit thin on the ground this end. Just hit reply to any of my mails if you’d like to share anything.

British model train – Rob’s

Rob’s been in touch with a vid of his British model train layout:

“Hi Al,

I was really overwhelmed with the number of people who watched my last submission to you. It was over 7,000. That is pretty impressive. Since I am just about finished with Farland, my model train layout, I put together a slide show with pictures of many areas of my layout.

Although I live in Colorado, I have been modeling Britain in the mid-60s to the early 80s.

Every time I finished a small area, I like to take pictures of it to see how it looks through the camera lens. Some of the images show an obviously incomplete area and that is because the photo was taken a while ago before that section was complete.

I know lots of your submissions are photos, so here are mine.

PS My next project is to model an Interurban line in Colorado. It will be N Scale.”

A huge thanks to Rob, who has contributed a fair bit to the site. It’s always a delight when I see his name in my inbox. Really enjoyed watching that – hope you did too.

If you’d like to see more of Rob’s layouts have a look in the Hall of Fame.

For me, his stand out piece is the London Underground section of his layout – the detail really is amazing. Rob took his time over it and it paid off handsomely, here’s a pic and link if you want to have alook:
