Andrew’s been in touch again, this time with some model railway road viaduct construction.
(He did a fantastic how to on a bridge made from razors, believe it or not. Part 1 is here, and part 2 is here.)
This time he’s sharing pics of his viaduct, which I think looks excellent.
“Hi Alastair
Since my scratch but girder bridge I’ve moved a little forward and bought 3 viaduct kits and done a bit of doctoring to make them fit the layout backdrop and down to the bottom end of the layout.
I’ve also done a canal scenery and used false grass cut along each seam for reeds and stuck with clear hot glue, which is quite impressive if I say so my self, I will wait the readers comments.
The canal was made from a base board MDF and painted to match a photo of my local canal.
More later.
Here are my pics
Andrew”
I always find it amazing how a little doctoring and scratch building transforms any kit – it has been a very common theme of the posts over the years.
And it got me thinking too about the costs of kits.
A ways to save a small fortune on thing like viaducts are the printable buildings.
Don’t take my word for it though, have a look at John’s pics: Faller HO viaduct.
That’s all for today peeps.
Please do keep ’em coming folks. Latest ebay cheat sheet is here.
And if you’re tired of sitting on the side lines, a great way to plan and start your layout is with the Beginner’s Guide.

That is brilliant and it just shows how large your imagination can take you.
What a fabulous result Andrew.
The water looks good Andrew. You say it’s painted MDF – I think there is more to it than that! MDF has a flat, very smooth surface, which is a good start, but can you tell us more, including paint details? Taking a photo of a real canal is a good idea: We seem to have a tendency to remember water as blue!
Regarding obtaining kits. I am in Virginia and running O gauge.
Looks well Andrew , ading the grass around the viaduct base was a good bit of scenic touch up …Dave
Beautifully done Andrew – love the multiple kit bashing idea to create a strong visual impact and the water looks great – Glyn
Great job. It looks very realistic,
Very impressive. Keep it up.
A splendid viaduct. The water in the canal is very successful.
Great job, indeed! I am hoping someone might have some ideas on modeling a structure like the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Lochaber, Scotland.

How long is this viaduct in actual feet / inches
This is HO, correct??
Great looking bridge
I’m amazed at the realism, especially the canal. I’m 65 & I’ve never seen a blue canal. Great job Andrew! Pops
Beautiful job—looks real. thanks Vic
What a very well constructed via duct, a lot of patience was involved here, beautiful!!!!!!
Great job Andrew! Unfortuneately we don’t have that many canals in Australia, if any., Thanks for sharing. Cheers Rossco, Adelaide, South Australia
It is these additions which changes a layout into a realistic setting and therefore believable. Instead of being a train set with buildings an bridges not attached to the ground.
Peter
Very realistic impression.
Great effort.
I would love to see a better framed pic.( Only the scenery) with some rolling stock and maybe a loco.
great work. so real to look at,
Well done and impressive….my question is where does one find the backdrop scenery that you used behind your viaducts?…..Thanks…..Norm
What a great idea. I’ll look into that too. Thanks
Doesn’t get any better, like contrast of inner arch roofs. Have seen the opposite with barges going down the viaduct and tracks, road below lol. In France somewheres connected with the canals. Don’t change though.
Regards, Rich B.
Well done, Andrew. Looks like it could be a scene from Midsomer Murders! Grasses at the pillars add a lot!

Andrew….. You are so right….just add a little touch whether it be color or crates or scenery to a kit and it makes it come alive. Fantastic viaduct…..impressive. I love those reeds…… I have plans for a small bridge over a stream and, if you don’t mind, will copy your idea.
Reminded me of Rockville on the Susquehanna
I really think it is impressive. Yes the reeds are great. Are you planning on changing the backdrop behind to reflect the viaduct scene? I think the water needs to continue rearward to the backdrop to complete the illusion.
Very realistic, good job
Great work Andrew, getting so much variety into that narrow space.
Very impressive and realistic.
Where did you purchase the viaduct kits from? They look great!!! I have a similar location for them but these look real!!
Looks Great.!!!!! Keep up the good work.
Two Thumbs Up !!! Awesome work.
Who did you purchase the viaduct kits from? Great job!!!!! Water looks fantastic!!!
