N scale train layouts – Sal’s

When it comes to N scale train layouts, it’s always a pleasure to see Sal’s name pop up in my inbox:

“Hi Alastair

I have been enjoying and appreciating what you do for some time now.

I love seeing other layouts, what people are doing and how they got there.

I retired 2 years ago and have now turned my shop into my train room. It’s small – N scale 14×5 – but with N Scale you can do a lot.

I was out of the hobby for almost 20 years and I am now back. I attached a few photos if you would like to share them.

Again thanks for what you do, you help make Model Railroading “The Greatest Hobby In The World”.

The Lighthouse was scratch built as were the freighter and the tanker ships.

The fishing boat at “Captain Haddock’s Seafood” was also scratch built. Also scratch built was the Bates Motel scene.

A huge, big thanks to Sal for adding to the N scale train layouts.

And it’s always nice to read that folk are enjoying the blog too.

Sal’s layout reminded me of Bob’s: Bob’s N scale layout.

I’ve been having a tough time of it at the moment. When you get to my age the technical side of running a blog can be a bit mind numbing.

But I am encouraged to go on – it’s amazing what a few kind comments can do to spur you on.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming, it really would put a smile on my face.

Oh, and don’t forget the Beginner’s Guide, if today is the day you start your railroad adventure.

Best

Al

And now on to Rob:

“Dear Alastair,

I enjoy all the tips and layout pictures and look forward to each new post.

I have been working on my own 00 Scale layout since June.

I came into the possession of a DCC Loco with sound in May and I was hooked.

I immediately started planning my own. I decided to name it The Great Western England Railway or GWER.

The area I am modeling I call Farland.

The main Station is Farland Howe and the country station at the other end of the layout and the highest point on the loop is called Shell Hill.

My wife’s name is Michelle, so Shell Hill.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

I live in Colorado, USA which is a long way from the UK, but I have traveled there many times and lived in London as a kid for a few months. It made a lasting impression.

Please just email me if you’d like to share anything.

Weathering wood models O scale

Tom’s been busy with his weathering wood models O scale – have a look at his pics – stunning stuff.

He’s been kind enough to share more pics of his layout.

If you missed it last time, they are here.

“I can tell you that this On3 layout has been in Narrow gauge Gazette along with my Gn15 diorama, other bits and pieces of my work can be seen in S scale magazine, MRC and soon in MR.

The room itself is about 24 x 28 feet not a whole lot of room for O scale with in this space I needed a fairly good size work area, storage (lots of storage you understand how we MRR’s collect things)

Here is one other point that I would like to make and its something that most of us for get about, when you work in scale thats less the 1 to 1 which of course the real thing. That you should tone down or subdue your colors I’ve seen in many magazines photo’s of great work only to be spoiled ( in my opinion only) Grass that is of such a color that it belongs in a cartoon on TV

Just an amazing layout. A big thank you to Tom. He makes it look like a lot fun to weathering wood models O scale.

I could look at Tom’s layout all day – it just has so much character.

In one of his earlier posts he explains how he uses dirt – real dirt – to help get the weathered look on his roads and buildings.

You cans see how well it works. It’s always the simple stuff that works best.

That’s all for today folks.

Please do keep ’em coming.

And if you want to make that start – just like Tom and all the others did – the Beginner’s Guide is here.

It’s a lot more fun doing than watching.
